There are about 350 inmates in Chinhoyi jail, with about 15 women. Most of the prisoners are guilty of petty crimes. Some are there not because they are ‘criminals’ but because they have been outspoken in their views. In addition there are also prisoners who have been granted bail but are unable to pay the fee. The prison chaplain recently appealed for any donations of maize, cooking oil, soap or blankets so that the prisoners can be fed and kept warm during the coming winter. They also need items for personal hygiene, reading materials and basic medicines.
